What is Autism?

Autism is a neurological developmental condition

`that can affect social skills, speech, eye contact, repetitive behaviours, communication and the way in which a person interacts with others this can be either in a private setting or in public.

Some people with Autism might prefer to work alone, or prefer to work or be in a quiet place, sometimes needing a calm environment to focus more efficiently.

Autism varies from individual to individual – no two people are affected in exactly the same way. Because it encompasses a range of conditions and symptoms, it is referred to as a spectrum.

Symptoms

  • May find it hard to communicate and interact with other people
  • May find it hard to understand how other people think or feel
  • May find things like bright lights or loud noises overwhelming, stressful or uncomfortable
  • May get anxious or upset about unfamiliar situations and social events
  • May take longer to understand information
  • May do or think the same things over and over
