Newsletter #2 – Autumn 2024

Here we are with the second newsletter from the Police National Dyslexia Association! We missed the summer one, due to professional and personal commitments, so we do apologise for that. We’ve been an official association for 10 months now, and in that time we have: Grown to nearly 600 members nationwide. Supported several individuals with queries around reasonable adjustments, diagnosis, and more. Visited the College of Policing to support their maximising potential conference and support our network. Run a hiking event in Scotland where we hiked Ben Nevis Met with some of the committee to go through their PNDA Declaration. In May 2024 The Chair Sgt Maria Canning (Devon and Cornwall Police) attended the College of Policing in company of Supt Ross Campbell (Warwickshire Police) to represent our Network.

Ben Nevis

In September 2024, the PNDA teamed up with the NATTC and took a trip to the Scottish Highlands to climb Ben Nevis as a group. This trip was a great achievement for all and a great success, where we spoke all things neurodiversity – and all things not! If you would be interested in attending an event like this in 2025, please do reach out.

The First Committee Meeting

The PNDA were very kindly hosted by Nottinghamshire Constabulary where we held our very first face to face committee meeting and all signed our PNDA Declarations. Only half of the committee were able to make it, but all are committed to the cause! From left to right in the photo below, we were joined by Superintendent Ross Campbell from Warwickshire, DCI Nick Wood from Nottinghamshire, Staff member Jenny Dunne from Cleveland Police, Sgt Maria Canning our Chair from D&C, Detective Inspector Karen Hallett from South Wales, Staff member Lizzie Armstrong from D&C, Detective Inspector James Bird from West Midlands Police and Sgt James Wells from Leicestershire Police. We were also lucky enough to get to meet and speak with Nottinghamshire’s DCC COOPER and PCC GODDEN.

And a Final Word… To finish, one of our co-founders, Chris Walton-Tate is leaving Devon and Cornwall Police! Having only just re-joined the Police in January of this year (after initially joining in 2012), he is leaving Devon and Cornwall to move to North Yorkshire Police and take up the role of Response Sergeant in York. We are really happy that the PNDA will now have one of the Vice Chairs in the North of the country to continue our work and be a contact for those in the northern areas! Chris has been, admittedly, a bit quiet on the public side of the PNDA but has been working hard to support those with neurodiversity within the South Devon area of Devon and Cornwall.

If you have any neurodiversity and dyslexia stories you feel should be included in this newsletter, please send them to us at the details below! We want to celebrate all your hard work and successes, even if you consider it to be a ‘small win,’ we’d love to hear real stories from you all!
